AI search for local businesses.

How ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity decide which clinic, restaurant, salon or shop to recommend near you, and what a local business can do to be one of them.

Local search now has a new front door

People still search Google Maps for “dentist near me”. But more of them now ask an AI assistant a fuller question: “Which dental clinic in Indiranagar is good for a root canal and open on Sundays?” or “Suggest a quiet café in Koramangala for working, with good Wi-Fi.”

The answer is a short list, usually three to five names, each with a reason. A business that isn’t on that list doesn’t get a second chance in that conversation. That’s the same shift we help larger brands with, applied to a street, a neighbourhood or a city.

How AI assistants choose local businesses

Each assistant works differently and none publishes its exact method, but the answers we read keep drawing on the same kinds of sources:

  • Business listings, above all your Google Business Profile: category, address, hours, photos and services. Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini lean on it heavily.
  • Reviews, both how many and what they say. An assistant asked for a clinic “good with children” looks for reviews that say exactly that.
  • Local directories and platforms buyers already use, such as Practo for doctors, Zomato for restaurants or Justdial for services.
  • Your own website, if it plainly states what you offer, where, and for whom.
  • Mentions elsewhere: local news, neighbourhood guides, “best of” lists and community discussions.

When these sources agree, the assistant can describe and recommend you with confidence. When they disagree, for example different phone numbers, old hours or a vague category, it tends to recommend someone else.

What Recvis does for local businesses

The work follows the same two steps as for any brand: first be known, then be chosen.

  • Measure. We write the questions your customers ask, with your area in them, and ask them on ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity. You see who gets recommended instead of you, and which sources the answers rely on.
  • Fix your facts. Name, address, phone, hours, services and category consistent across your Google Business Profile, your website and the directories that matter in your field.
  • Make your website readable for AI: a clear description of each service and the areas you serve, plus LocalBusiness structured data so assistants don’t have to guess.
  • Reviews that say something. We help you ask happy customers for specific, honest reviews. We never write, buy or incentivise fake ones: they break platform rules and put your listing at risk.
  • Get mentioned where your customers look: local guides, “best of” lists and community answers in your neighbourhood.
  • Re-check every month with the same questions, so you can see what changed.

A five-minute check you can do today

  1. Ask ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode the question a new customer would ask, with your area in it. Are you named?
  2. Search your business name on Google. Is your profile complete: category, hours, photos, services, website link?
  3. Compare your phone number and address on Google, your website and the main directory in your field. Are they identical?
  4. Read your last ten reviews. Do they mention the services you want to be known for?
  5. Run your website through our free AI visibility checker to see whether AI crawlers can read it.

What to expect

Local answers depend on where the person asking is and on what the assistant can find that day, so results vary more than for national brands. Nobody can guarantee a place in an AI answer, and we won’t. Listing and fact fixes often show up within weeks; reviews and mentions build over a few months.
